More like “Kymmie Getting High.” What? Surely you’ve heard by now that the movie is about Anne Hathaway as drug addict Kym, on leave from rehab to attend her sister’s wedding. That’s sweet, right? Well, it’s very quickly shown that Kym’s a bit of a pariah. Then it’s very quickly shown why: she’s a total asshole. My favorite comment I heard before I saw the movie was someone completely freaked out saying, “I thought I was going to see a romantic comedy.” And doesn’t it sound like one? Some sweet little old-fashionedy thing, a la “Four Weddings and a Funeral?” “Best Friend’s Wedding?” If there’s wedding in the title, it’s for chicks, right? This was more down the road of “Requiem for a Dream.” Not all the way down the road, but a few blocks. Definitely in the neighborhood. Good movie? Yes. Good date movie? No. I saw this movie on a date, and I got no play. So I don’t recommend it in that capacity. Maybe it was just a little too disturbing. Or maybe that dude was just not that into me. Either way, the movie sits on you like a lump. Like life. Like a life lump. In a good way. The acting is great. Mather Zickel is a real standout as the Best Man. Debra Winger is fantastic. And, if you know any addicts, the antics of Kym will resonate jarringly true. Hathy plays a great addict. That isolationist, self-obsessed being. They say that when you get sober, you’re emotionally the age you were when you started using. So, here’s this 20-something 14 year-old throwing tantrums about not being the maid-of-honor. At first, you feel bad for her, then you start distancing yourself from her emotionally like everyone else. Definitely go see it. Maybe even get high and go see it. No, get sober and go see it. Relapse and go see it? I’m not sure what the best path is on this one. You’ll definitely relate if you’ve done any of these things. Laura House
