Wall-E Review

Once again, it’s Pixar FTW!  I said in my Summer Preview that I like Pixar and I like robots.  This movie shows you exactly why.  In the right hands, robots can be so much more than mechanical automatons that do human bidding.  In fact, even the ones that are intended for such menial labor can…

Incredible Hulk Review

Ang Lee’s Hulk movie wasn’t so good.  I didn’t love it, in fact, like most people, I didn’t even really like it much.  (Ang Lee, stick to realistic human drama, please.)  It was trying to be more than a comic book movie.  It had this weird story about Bruce Banner’s father, and these weird, existential…

Kung Fu Panda Review

Ska-doosh!  Damn you, Jack Black and/or writers for putting that word into my head!  Now I’ll never get rid of it.  It doesn’t even mean anything.  It’s only used once in the movie yet it sticks in my brain like kids asking “Are we there yet?” over and over.  I blame the TV trailer that…

The Strangers Review

I’m always wary of scary/horror movies these days.  Ever since “Saw”, horror movies have taken a downward turn.  It’s all torture porn.  Nobody wants to creep you out and make you squirm in your seat just as a result of mood.  It’s all body parts and graphic violence.  And you know what?  There’s no imagination…

Indiana Jones Review

“I got a bad feeling about this.”  – Indiana Jones When the end credits started to roll, there was a smattering of applause…and almost as many “boos”.  Yep, that’s the sound of my expectations being dashed on the rocks.  The only things I heard about this movie prior to seeing it was that the reviews…

The Fall Review

You know those dreams you have that have all sorts of amazing things happening that look beautiful and poetic, like a storybook fairytale, but none of it necessarily makes any sense?  Yeah, that’s kinda what “The Fall” is like.  Wait, wait…no, that’s what “The Cell” is like.  Of course, both of these films were directed…

Summer Movie Preview 2008 Part 2

After May, things get pretty crazy.  There are a lot of movies I want to see, with some obvious highlights.  But someone please tell M. Night Shyamalan, Will Ferrell and Brendon Fraser to re-examine their careers.  Thanks. June 6: “Kung Fu Panda”.  Jack Black voices this animated feature as the title character.  I really…

There Will Be Blood review

There will be blood.  That’s what I said when the movie was over.  So this was directed by Richard Dean Anderson – uh, sorry, Paul Thomas Anderson.  He’s the guy that directed BOOGIE NIGHTS.  I’d rather have seen this directed by MacGyver, actually.  Everybody loved MacGyver.  That guy could do anything with a foil gum…

Iron Man review

Since I didn’t really read the Iron Man comics, I didn’t really have any way to discern whether the script really followed or stayed true to the books.  This way I couldn’t be disappointed.  But at the same time, I didn’t have the benefit of having a built-in emotional investment in these characters like I…

Summer Movie preview 2008 Part 1

Last summer there wasn’t much to look forward to.  These are the only movies I really liked at all: the fourth “Die Hard”, “Transformers”, the Harry Potter movie, “The Simpsons Movie”, the Bourne movie and “Stardust”.  Everything else was lackluster.  The “Fantastic Four, Rise of the Bored Viewer” movie could’ve been better.  “Spiderman 3”…
